And she comes - because friendships are important things, because despite the strange things happening (influx of people who are visible in parts of the Mansion, but not in others, what the hell), Anita keeps business as usual.
She'll stand in the doorway and smirk.
"Waiting for someone, handsome?"
Hiiiiiii! People are still there! Really! ^^
He smiles rather widely, glad for the sudden appearance of the familiar face. "I think perhaps you, chérie. How have you been?"
She grins in return and wanders over to sit on the arm of his chair. "I've been alright, I guess. How've you been, Frenchie?"
"I've been very well, actually. It seems these days things are looking up for me." He very nearly takes her hand but reconsiders the gesture, wondering if it does not seem too familiar a thing to do. "But you..you only guess that you are alright?"
Repositioning himself a bit so he might look at her better he tilts his head to the side as he asks, "Why is it you only guess?"
She gives him a sweet grin. "Oh, no, Lestat. I'm fine. It's just a figure of speech. Really."
"Well yes, of course." Resting his elbow on the arm of the chair and, in turn, his head on his hand he continues to observe her. "But I worry for you from time to time. Perhaps I should not. But in any case I do. I suppose it is inevitable for you cared enough about me to speak to me when I myself seemed so very troubled and every time after that."
"I worry about you too, Lestat," what with your complicated love life, is the implication. "You know you can always talk to me, right? After all, it's what friends are for." And she nudges him companionably. There's nothing sexual about this - just ... friendship, of the durable and stable kind.
It's a bit odd for Anita Blake, but there it is.
He nods. "Yes. Actually I'm quite certain of it." There is the small hint of a smile playing on his lips once more as he brushes a bit of hair out of his own face with a soft sigh. "And you know you're always welcome to say whatever it is that is on your mind. I shall always listen."
She chuckles, a little. "Heh - the place's been funny lately, Lestat. Guess I should mention that."
"What do you mean funny?" He isn't quite certain he knows what she speaks of and so he does not assume. "In what way?"
"Strange-funny. Quiet, I guess."
There is a small nod. "I'd noticed a bit, though I was not certain if it was simply me. I have not been around to truly note the changes and so-- I thought perhaps it was simply like this sometimes, I suppose."
"It comes and goes - I won't complain about it, though."
Her life has been better - Celebrimbor and her are closer than ever, and he seems on the way to healing.
Pandora slips in the chair next to Lestat in companionable silence.
He's probably used to this routine by now.
He hardly looks up at first, preferring instead to simply let an amused smile come over his lips. It is after a moment of purposeful silence that he finally speaks, though softly. "I hope you have been well. It has been some time."
She's equally quiet and slightly amused. "It has. What news, Lestat?"
The smile widens, though he attempts to keep a straight face. It is an odd friendship at best, if that is what it can be called, he doesn't quite know. "Marius is a stubborn fool. But I do not know that you can quite call that news."
She laughs, low, eyes closing a little. "Ah, yes. Is he still such a child, pray tell?"
He laughs in return though the sound is tinged with bitterness, "Was he ever anything but?" Shaking his head he turns to face her at last and though his tone remains casual they are edged with something a bit deeper. "I truly should like to know, has he ever been able to rise above the pettiness of childhood? The squabbles and the bullying?"
She tilts her head as she sifts through memories, slowly - while the motion would be odd to any human, it's probably natural enough to Lestat. "I remember a time where he and I understood each other," she says softly. "Before I received the Dark Gift. It was our undoing, Lestat."
He frowns, rather lost in thought at such an implication that this and his own thoughts lead him to. After a moment he speaks again, though he seems still lost in his troubles. "And yet he cannot resist the allure of having a companion eternally by his side." A pause. "That is no crime, of course. We all desire companionship...but it seems his infatuations are hard pressed to continue once mortality is no longer in the picture."
Pandora's eyes are almost amused - but there's something dark lurking in there.
"Marius will never cease to wish for more toys, Lestat. It is never anything else than that."
At this he becomes immediately more attentive than before, though he was not actually inattentive to begin with. "Are we truly no more than playthings to him?"
The 'we', Pandora decides, is not inclusive of herself - not anymore, anyway. "I would sooner think it was all I was to him, than otherwise, Lestat."
He falls silent for a long while, as if lost in thought. Finally, nodding. "Perhaps it is better that way."
She nods as well. "Perhaps." A beat, and a question. "What prompted this, however?"
There is another long silence, his face falling considerably. "Pain." He sighs, shaking his head. "Hurt. Many things. Things I cannot even begin to explain, not truly, though I should like to. Explain them and leave them all behind."
Pandora leans back, looks at Lestat a moment. "Lestat. There is something I have been meaning to ask you about."
"Ask me then, for you cannot get an answer if you do not." Despite the sorrow he lets a smile come to his lips, though it does not quite reach his eyes. "I shall do my best to answer."
"Tell me if you have ever met Those Who Must Be Kept."
He thinks about it a long moment and as his lips move to form the word 'no' he realizes that this is not at all true. It is a moment more before he nods, "Long ago. I hardly think about it anymore. I'd almost forgotten. Why do you ask?"
"Because in my own memories, Lestat, you saw them more recently than you recall."
An eyebrow raises and curiosity piques once more. "Really? Well if it was as disastrous as the first occasion then I can imagine it was not the most pleasant of events."
I fail replying. Life has been eating my soul lately. *hugs you lots* I hope you're doing alright.
"I don't know if disastrous would be quite the appropriate term," Pandora replies carefully.
Happens! I'm fairly swamped as well. &hearts *hugs* I hope you're doing alright too.
"What would you deem an appropriate term then?" He tilts his head to the side, truly very intensely interested now.
"Life changing, perhaps." She's thoughtful. "I wonder if I should keep this to myself, now."
